Bob's Letters

Thank you for visiting my website. Here are excerpts from just a few of the thousands of letters I’ve received over the years from kids, teachers, and parents who have seen the SCAR program. They always remind me to thank God for granting me the privilege of touching so many lives with my own story of addiction and recovery.
Bob Lapete, Founder of SCAR

I have included two of my poems - I write one for each school I visit. Besides the excerpts below, there are also two student letters included as well. I invite you to read them by clicking on the links at the bottom of this page. They will open in new windows on your screen. Thank you again and God bless.

The Message I interpreted was that when you drink you are hurting yourself, but when you drink and drive you could be hurting others. That if you want to drink you can, but, think before you drive while drinking.
10 Grader Age 16

" A group of eager sophomores, overtaken by cold and bore, listened all
day to elders recite the effects of drugs to us. I really wasn't paying much attention until you were introduced to us. It was different. It was a man whose voice had been affected by the combination of drinking and driving. As we sat and listened, a few of us were getting watery eyes because your story effected us all. Now when we're faced with the decision of taking a drink or doing drugs when they are offered to us, we will be reminded of what can happen and how alcohol can permanently change our lives like it did yours. Thank you for coming. You definitely made a difference! "

He was trying to make a point about drinking & driving without saying "Don't do it". He was saying this is my story and what happened, its up to you to make a different choice than me. It really had an impact that the classroom techniques can't have. I think his talk reached us in a different way.
11th Grader Age 16

" I am happy that you came to our school to talk to us. Now, because I know the price I might have to pay for getting drunk, I won't be as tempted by alcohol. I am really sorry about what happened to you and your friends, that you had to go through such an awful time. What you told us really moved me. Thank you for telling us about a big mistake we might make, and sharing your mistake and experiences with us today. I'll always remember your talk to us and look back on it if people offer me a drink. That I can promise you!"

" I'll never forget Sophomore Awareness and the way I felt when you spoke. When I looked at the pictures of what was left of your car, and the pictures of your friends who had died as a result of drinking and driving, I couldn't help but feel sorrow. I wanted to do something but there was nothing I could do for them. As I listened to you sing I then realized you WERE doing something to help prevent this alcoholic sickness and I didn't feel so helpless anymore. Because you are doing something to help, something I could never do if I were in your shoes, and because you have the guts to share your story and your permanent handicaps with us too, I want you to know that you are helping to saves lives today. Thanks for letting us know how your mistakes changed your life. I'll always remember it."

“ Your openness in sharing your personal story has an enormous impact on our students. We are indeed certain that it is often difficult for speakers to mesmerize an audience . . .yet each year we have total silence with our 300 students when you speak. Your slide show and injuries leave little doubt of the seriousness of your accident and its impact on your life. We are very happy that you continue to educate us on the dangers of drinking and driving.”
Juanita Lord, Counselor, Noble Middle School, ME

" I enjoyed hearing your story today. It really helped me understand more about drunk driving and the consequences. Before you came many teachers had talked to me about DWI (driving while intoxicated) but actually meeting someone that had been through this really helped me understand what could happen to me. I think your very lucky to be alive and it's extremely sad what happened to you and all of your friends!  Drunk driving has killed many people and I'm very glad you weren't one of them. Just by showing us what happened to you as a result of this will help kids see it for ourselves in a very personal way. Thanks for coming to my school."

My goal is very simple: by sharing the experiences I have had, I would like to help kids grow up to achieve their own personal best without drugs and alcohol.
